What is Autism?
Who can participate?
Who benefits?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. 1 in 68 children in the US have a diagnosis of ASD.

The Autism 5k is an inclusive, community event. We welcome runners and walkers of all ages and abilities to participate. We strive to accommodate unique needs of individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities. Strollers are welcome. Pets are not allowed unless the animal is a service dog.

From 2012-2017, proceeds from the Autism 5k established and grew The Autism Education Fund at the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region, which continues to make grants annually. Starting in 2018, proceeds from the Autism 5k have been donated to the Danville Science Center to fund autism-inclusive programming and expansion of early childhood development exhibits and programs.
